I really like the free resource I found, because the questions are much more simplistic for my grade 4’s to comprehend and respond to (get it here). I have been pulling different pages from each of these collections, as well as from a free online source. To start developing my binder of resources for this novel study, I downloaded two resources off of TPT from here and here. To my surprise I really enjoyed it! Even though I was a bit disappointed with the beginning (I think my hopes were set way to high, as well as I was thinking this was going to be like the Hunger Games – so really the beginning of this book is probably awesome, I just ruined it for myself), the rest of the book picks up and is a great read! If you love the Hunger Games and the Divergent series, give this a read (I believe it is a set of 4 books all together to complete the series!) It was not until I came across it in our class library that I thought about giving it a read for myself. I never gave the book any thought for the next few years. He explained to me what it was about, gave me the limited resources he had and has used for the past couple of years, and that was it. My associate teacher was doing this book with his Grade 6’s as a novel study. I first heard of this book from one of my past teaching placements. But he's dirty from his day at work, so he decides to talk to her later.I am excited to write today about our first novel study as a class! The book we are doing is called The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. He'd seen her on top of the roof during her shenanigans. As Lina leaves the Gathering Hall, Doon considers saying hi, but doesn't.Then he smiles and lets her go without any trouble. The mayor is also annoyed, until Lina delivers the message.It's fun waving at the people down below until she gets in trouble with the guards. An assistant guard admits her to a waiting room, but since she's bored, Lina goes up on the roof of the hall. Lina goes to the mayor's office, which is in Gathering Hall (at the town's center).He wants her to tell the mayor that a delivery will be ready at eight from Looper. One guy who wants a message delivered is a little strange looking (big teeth and bushy hair).But hey, at least she learns a little more about the city and its inhabitants each time. Lina spends the morning delivering messages for people about mundane things (dinner plans, etc.).Basically, Lina has to repeat back a message anyone gives her to make sure she's getting it right she has to wear red so people can identify her and she can only deliver the message to the person it's intended for.

There, Captain Fleery instructs her in how to be a good messenger. The next day, Lina goes to the messengers' headquarters.She's only seen the place in her imagination, but she's convinced that it's a real place. Among the many things decorating the walls are pictures that Lina drew, of a shining city where the lights are always on.It's absolutely crammed with old stuff, because the people of Ember don't throw away anything that they can still use. Now, Lina takes Poppy up to their apartment, which is above the shop.Turns out that two years ago, Lina's father had died from a coughing sickness going around the city, and Lina's mother had died a few months later giving birth to Poppy.
Lina's little sister Poppy is around two years old, so not quite old enough to understand all this.
